I buy

basic self-build Code 3 ruralZED™ unit. (excluding

Why is it
called ruralZED™?
ZED
stands for
Zero (Fossil) Energy Development. ‘Rural’ is a way
of reminding everyone that the majority of the UK’s housing
functions at a lower density than the urban developments that sometimes
command a lot of attention.
Who makes
ruralZED™?
The system is designed and created by The
ZEDfactory, a leading architectural practice. Bill Dunster of
ruralZED™ is an internationally known architect, writer and
speaker on environmental issues in architecture, and has spent over ten
years developing the system at ZEDfactory. ruralZED™ is also
the title of a consortium of companies specialising in eco-building,
and who fully support the new housing system. The consortium comprises
Jewsons, Charcon, Hansgrohe, mi-space, Rationel, ZEDfabric and
ZEDfactory.
What is the
Code for Sustainable Homes?
The Code for Sustainable homes was launched on December 13, 2006 by the
Department Communities and Local Government to enable a step change in
sustainable building for new homes and replaces the former EcoHomes
ratings. Under the Code, homes are given star ratings at six levels,
with Level 1 requiring thermal efficiency and Level 6 being
‘zero carbon’.
