EcoBuild is Europe's biggest event dedicated to sustainable design, construction and the built environment. It’s also the biggest showcase of sustainable construction products in the UK.

From the 26th to the 28th Feb 2008 the ruralZED™ housing system was displayed as a full-size complete dwelling, stripped back to reveal the anatomy of the building and the design features, products and solutions which combine to make zero carbon housing a viable reality now.

Visitors were able to tour the entire structure and learn about the materials used, its systems and energy performance as well as the CNC machined timber frame that made it possible to complete the entire structure in just three days.

The exhibition was visited by the Housing Minister Caroline Flint, Liberal Democrat Leader Nick Clegg, and a host of other high profile figures in the environmental construction industry.

LandARK – the ZEDfactory zero carbon off grid home kit for individuals

If you have a scrap of land, maybe a backgarden, a hillside, a coppice clearing, or maybe even a corner of somebody’s car park, and you have a spare few weeks holiday, or some good friends;

  • you want an aspirational interior with space to relax
  • you need affordable, comfortable accomodation that works well as a home or an office or sleeps up to 8 people as a shorter stay cabin
  • which is cosy in winter and cool in summer
  • made from healthy natural materials such as FSC timber, superinsulation and draughtproofing
  • which perches on the land without needing expensive foundations or concrete
  • running off logs in winter or using the summer sun to provide a hot shower
  • with the lights and radio powered from sunlight for most of the year, or mid winter wind
  • which doesn’t need a connection to the drains or the meter unless you do
  • which includes water tanks with options to connect to a standpipe
  • and blends into the landscape with weatherboarding and a sedum roof
  • and which will last many generations if it is loved

All you need is a rubber mallet, a tape measure, screwdrivers, a powerdrive drill, and enough peace to read the manual. If you can build a flat pack sofa, you can probably master your own rural escape pod. Should you need permissions from the authorities - the package comes with planning application instructions and drawings.

Join up with some friends, plan a community and build a new future yourself – on your terms.
